Redwood
City, Calif.-- June 22, 1999 -- Magically, Inc.,
and Sun Microsystems today announced that the two
companies, along with other Internet service providers
intend to form an alliance to offer K-12 schools
access to Magically's virtual desktop, MagicalDesk
(www.magicaldesk.com).
As part of the SchoolTone Alliance Program, MagicalDesk,
an Internet-based desktop service, will provide
a web-based file management system, email, calendar,
address book, to do list and bookmark program to
the K-12 market. The MagicalDesk product will port
to the Sun server platform and will be offered to
Solaris users.
The
SchoolTone Alliance Program is a joint marketing
and sales effort created by Sun to offer high-quality
portals that provide affordable and easy-to-access
Internet content, communication tools, and applications
targeting K-12 schools.
"The
demand for low cost, simplified access to customized
educational content and applications is moving the
education industry towards a service provider model,"
said Robert Iskander, director of market development,
Global Education and Research, Sun Microsystems.
"Sun is enabling this model of outsourced, web-based
services using proven technology, and leading a
strong industry alliance program to ensure schools
can take advantage of this model as quickly as possible."
"Our
collaboration with Sun and the SchoolTone Alliance
program are key to our move into the education market
and our expansion into new platforms,"said Erwin
Huang, chief executive officer of Magically, Inc.
"MagicalDesk offers an integrated suite of tools
that provides users with their own personal desktop,
while offering the tools they need to collaborate
with peers, coworkers and family members."
Using
existing PCs, Macs, workstations, or thin client
devices and standard Web browsers, students, teachers,
administrators, and parents can go to a single Web
site to access a virtual desktop customized for
the school and personalized for the user. The virtual
desktop will provide access to school-centric information
such as content from curriculum, digital libraries,
and online publications; communication tools such
as e-mail, calendars, and workgroup collaboration;
applications such as administration: financial,
and student information systems; library automation:
acquisition, cataloging, and circulation; and instructional
management through scheduling, attendance, and assessment.
MagicalDesk
Integrated Suite
The MagicalDesk suite of tools is
integrated to allow users to convert emails into
to-do items, calendar events, and Internet bookmarks.
Students can call up the address book from the email
module and send emails to multiple persons within
the address book without having to remember the
recipient's email address. Additionally, students
and teachers will be able to transfer files to and
from their MagicalFiles and computer desktop with
ease.
Web-Based
Collaboration
The calendar and file systems of
MagicalDesk were created for collaboration. Students
can elect to share files with fellow students, friends,
teachers or parents, or elect to keep their files
private. The MagicalDesk calendar lets teachers
and students post appointments and to-do items for
parents to review with their child.
Customization
The MagicalDesk.com layout and features
are easily customizable. Students can personalize
their desktop with their favorite Internet search
engines and personal bookmarks.
