Inc. today launched version 2.0 of MagicalDesk
(www.magicaldesk.com), a best of breed, integrated
virtual desktop. MagicalDesk best exemplifies
the advantages provided by the emerging application
service provider (ASP) market: a suite of personal
information management and collaboration tools,
available to users anytime, anywhere through
the Internet. The free service combines a customizable
desktop system that stores and synchronizes
documents, online calendar, address book, email,
task list, and Internet bookmarks. MagicalDesk
eliminates the need to install and maintain
expensive computer hardware and software.
MagicalDesk
2.0 provides web-based access to personal productivity
applications that can be tailored for personal
use. Integrated support for common document
file formats empowers the user to work from
most any PC, Mac, Unix, or Web-TV with an Internet
connection. Through an enhancement called the
MagicalViewer, MagicalDesk provides users with
access to more than 250 file formats, including
MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Lotus
1-2-3, that let's users access documents without
having the supporting application on their local
hard disk.

Modules
Document
Storage: The MagicalFiles document management
system lets users copy, move, backup or share
documents created with desktop applications
such as word processing documents, multimedia
presentations, spreadsheets, and image files.
Documents can be stored in a private folder
for individual viewing, or in a shared folder
for group viewing.
Email:
The email system supports the standard SMTP
and POP3 Internet protocol, which allows it
to be used as a front end to multiple email
accounts. New to the site is an email filter
that automatically blocks unsolicited mail.
The email module lets users create multiple
signatures for personal and business responses
and even offers an out-of-office auto response
mechanism. The email system is integrated with
the calendar and task list and lets users easily
convert emails into task items and calendar
events. Email drafts can be written and saved,
and emails can even be bookmarked for easy filing,
storage and forwarding to others. Version 2.0
also offers a spell check feature.
Calendar:
The calendar feature is designed to synchronize
with popular personal digital assistants such
as Palm Computing's Palm III and Palm V, Handspring's
Visor, and Microsoft Windows CE. Viewable by
day, week, month and year, the calendar offers
multi-colored event icons for easy remembrance
of business and personal tasks such as meetings,
deadlines, travel, medical visits, and birthdays.
Integrated with the MagicalFiles document management
system, the calendar lets users post important
files within their daily schedule for quick
access when preparing for a meeting or event.
The calendar allows for email reminders, so
as not to miss important deadlines.
MagicalDesk
calendars can be shared with colleagues or among
friends and family. An executive who has multiple
people scheduling appointments can avoid embarrassing
over scheduling through this "smart" calendar.
If a meeting or event is already scheduled,
the calendar will clearly show any overlap.
Privacy is not an issue since the MagicalDesk
calendar let's users post an appointment as
private, so that no one can view what the appointment
is for.
Address
Book: The address book stores personal and professional
contact information, such as names, title, multiple
email addresses, business and home addresses,
multiple phone numbers, important URL's associated
with each contact, and special dates to remember.
It even offers a notes area for more detailed
information. The address book lets users classify
a contact as an individual, part of a group,
or both. The Address Book can be viewed in either
a list or business card format.
Integrated
with the email module, the address book lets
users select a contact or list of contacts to
send an email message to. It is fully integrated
to synchronize with most PDAs. Task List: Integrated
with the email and calendar modules, the task
list lets users convert emails into personal
task items. Email from a colleague regarding
the due date of a report can be converted into
a task item with all the details from the original
email, including graphics. Multiple tasks can
be added at one time, prioritized and shared
with colleagues. When creating a task, users
can select to send themselves or a colleague
an email reminder -- a good way to ensure that
deadlines wonÕt be missed. Additionally, the
task feature is designed to work with most PDAs
to synchronize information from a PDA with a
MagicalDesk account.
Personal
Bookmarks: The MagicalDesk bookmarks feature
lets users rename web addresses into a more
recognizable name. These bookmarks also can
be synchronized with most common browser bookmarks.
Synchronization:
This optional downloadable application lets
users synchronize files automatically between
their local hard disk and their MagicalDesk,
ensuring that the most current copy of any file
is on whichever system the user is accessing.
This feature also allows for synchronization
of the MagicalDesk address book and calendar
with many popular PDA's.
Customization
The MagicalDesk desktop layout
and features are easily customizable. Users
can personalize their desktop with their favorite
Internet search engines like Yahoo and Excite,
personal book finder from Amazon.com, or work
calendar. Users can also write their own HTML
codes to create new tools for their environment.
The
Basic Service
The free MagicalDesk service
includes a personal file system; synchronization
feature to ensure that files and Internet bookmarks
are consistent on whatever machine that is used;
calendar system that can be kept private or
shared with others; address book; to-do list;
Internet bookmarks, five megabytes of storage
space and one POP email account.
Premium
Services
MagicalDesk offers several premium
services, including:

. A Magical Viewer which translates more than
250 file formats into HTML code so that users
can view documents, even when they don't have
the right application on the computer that they
are using ($5.00 per month/3-month free trial

Security Features
MagicalDesk gives users control
over their business and personal information
by providing password protection. For ultimate
protection, users can choose to protect their
entire MagicalDesk with SSL encryption technology
by selecting this option as they log into their
MagicalDesk account.

MagicalDesk works best with Microsoft
Windows 95, 98, or NT; Apple Macintosh OS; or
a Unix environment. Recommended browsers include
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or Netscape
